Health Risks Of Smoking Cigars

We’ve all heard of the perils related to smoking cigarettes, but just what are the risks of cigar smoking and are the perils just as risky, or more so? Well, scientific study done by the National Cancer Institute has been connected with a variety of cancers of the throat, lungs, voice box, and esophagus. Are cigars as addictive as cigarettes, and if so, why are so many people addicted to cigarettes as opposed to cigars? Truth be told, all tobacco products can become addictive as they contain the addictive chemical nicotine in them, and this includes smokeless tobacco as well. Products such as chewing tobacco contain nicotine, which cause people to become addicted to smokeless tobacco as well. Most smokers of cigars rarely inhale the smoke deeply, or at all, thus causing superficial absorption of nicotine. Cigarette smokers tend to inhale, causing the nicotine to be absorbed faster and more readily by the lungs. It is still possible for cigar smokers to become addicted, even if they do inhale the nicotine more superficially, if they smoke on a regular basis.

Why don’t cigar smokers smoke less often if nicotine is so addictive? It appears that for several reasons smokers become less addicted to cigars. The most obvious reason is that the nicotine is inhaled much more superficially than in regular cigarette smoking, causing less nicotine to be absorbed by the body. The other reason is that cigars are still viewed by most as a luxury item, and are not as readily accessible as cigarettes are. However, if frequency of use increases, cigars can become just as addictive as cigarettes, and will actually pose increased health risks to the user in comparison to cigarettes.
